2013: F1 to use 1.6 Turbo Engines

Mock F1 BMW Turbo 1.6 liter engine

2013 is the year FIA will mandate that all manufacturers put their 2.4 liter n/a V8s to pasture (the one’s that rev to 18k+ rpms and product a prodigious 800+ hp).  Instead the field will be sporting 1.6 liter turbocharged inline 4 cylinder engines w/ 12k rpm maximum rev limit.  Expect high pressure gas direct injection technology (hopefully it will trickle down to normal cars as it significantly increases fuel economy).  Rules do not mention of a stated engine layout (inline, opposed, v configuration, etc.), nor whether engines are to be electric or combustion ignition.  FIA will also limit the # of engines to be used a season from 8 this year, 5 in 2013 and 4 in 2014 (with out 10 grid spot penalty for going over the allotted amount).  Expect Cosworth, Ferrari, Renault, Mercedes, BMW and possibly Honda to compete in 2013.  Full press release from F1.com
