Porsche 911 GT3R Hybrid

Posted: October 12, 2010 in Green Technology, Racing

Porsche has several hybrids coming our way including conventional parallel series in Cayenne and Panamera.  However in racing Porsche has a GT3R hybrid that is gaining steam and it is not your normal hybrid.  It uses a system developed by Formula 1 called KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System).  Instead of a bank of heavy batteries (which have limits to regeneration and release of its potential energy) it uses a spinning flywheel system (up to 45k rpms) that can quickly charge and provide power to two electric motors connected to the front wheels (this allows better torque vectoring for acceleration).  The system takes advantage of the harder braking and need for instant maximum power similar to an ultra-capacitor (but with much less weight).  For more pictures and the complete article see: Link: Popular Mechanic’s
