VW Sets Single Tank Distance Record

Posted: October 5, 2010 in Being Green

A little old news but there is a new single tank driving distance record of 1,527 miles – done with a VW Passat BlueMotion 1.6 liter turbodiesel.  That works out to almost 90 mpg imperial gallons and converted to a still impressive 70 mpg US equivalent.  This was done on a trip on the highway in Europe and the car had a 17 gallon tank of diesel.  It’s EPA highway mileage is 53 combined mpg.  Creative driving was needed to maximize the mpg such as prevent as much gear changes as possible by going from first to third; keeping to less than 2,000 revs; and removing excess weight – that anyone could benefit from.  Though it may have been the hypermiler dream it is quite impressive.
